Tulsa In A Nutshell Tulsa always surprises out-of-towners because it is a cultural oasis in the middle of the country. Once known as the Oil Capital of the World, names like Getty, Sinclair, Skelly and Phillips helped build Tulsa in the oil boom of the early 1900's. Their oil dollars brought the best in culture, art, and architecture from all over the world, from which we still benefit today. Today our economy has been further strengthened by the presence of large communication giants like MCI-Worldcom, Williams Communications and TV Guide / Preview Channel. Additionally, our state has been transformed from the dust-bowl image of the thirties through a massive statewide lake building effort that has resulted in Northeastern Oklahoma being know as Green Country, and our state having more shoreline than any other. YES we have paved streets, and NO we don't ride horses to work.
